Incorporated in 1895, Fanwood has a rich history rooted in the development of the Central New Jersey Railroad. Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS is noted for its sprawling 29-acre campus as well as its comprehensive music department, which includes several choirs, bands, as well as auditioned and non-auditioned groups. Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS is the only high school in the district.

Another notable school within the district is McGinn Elementary. Recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2022, the school is lauded for its diverse student body and well-rounded academic programs, covering everything from traditional academics to more creative applications.

Family-owned and operated for the past 75 years, the shop has left an indelible mark on the community as one of Fanwood’s treasured local establishments.

Another must-visit boutique is Enchantments along South Avenue. It’s a haven for those interested in all things handmade, from jewelry and handbags to ceramics and other unique finds. Meanwhile, Crown Jewellers LLC is a must stop if you’re looking for high-quality jewelry, Crown Jewellers provides an array of beautiful pieces, including custom designs.

For dining, check out Fabio’s Bistro, which is also located along South Avenue. This charming Italian restaurant is known for its authentic dishes and warm, inviting atmosphere. First-time visitors should definitely try their Sicilian-style pizza or gnocchi sorrentino. And while you’re on the hunt for the best pizza in the borough, stop by Houdini Pizza Laboratory, which offers unique, gourmet pizza options that will leave you wanting more. The Houdini Green, which features zucchini, eggplant, shallot, savoy cabbage, and goat cheese, is one of their most recommended wood-fired pizzas.

Sushi lovers should head to Ginger Sushi, another family-owned establishment, this time dedicated to sashimi and the art of sushi making. Their dragon roll, made with eel and cucumber topped with avocado, is a popular choice among newcomers.

If you’re in the mood for Mediterranean flavors and cooking, we can’t recommend Nostimo enough. Located at 383 South Avenue, Nostimo’s menu is jam-packed with authentic Greek favorites, from tzatziki to dip your falafel bites to traditional mains such as moussaka– which comes in a vegetarian-friendly option– and thalassina sta karvouna or grilled seafood.

Fanwood Bagels & Deli, which serves bagels, sandwiches, and salads, is perfect for a quick spot of breakfast or lunch. Their classic bacon, egg, and cheese on a freshly baked bagel is a local favorite for a quick breakfast before work.

Attractions and entertainment

  • Cannonball House: Also known as the Osborn Cannonball House, this historic building in neighboring Scotch Plains is one of the few remaining from the Revolutionary War period. The house, named for a cannonball lodged in its wall during the Battle of Short Hills in 1777, is now a museum providing insight into 18th-century life.
  • Fanwood Skatepark: A favorite among local skateboarders and BMX riders, Fanwood Skatepark offers a well-maintained space for enthusiasts to practice their skills. The park features a variety of ramps, rails, and other obstacles that cater to all skill levels. It’s also a great place to hang out and watch the action.
  • Fannywood Day: This is more than just a street fair. Hosted by the Borough of Fanwood and the Fanny Wood Day Committee, this event typically features a variety of fun games and activities. It’s usually held in the later half of the year.
  • Easter Egg Hunt in Forest Road Park: An annual Easter tradition in Fanwood, the Easter Egg Hunt is a fun-filled event for children. It’s usually held during the weekend of Easter Sunday. Dates vary, so make sure to check the local events calendar.
  • Halloween Parade and Costume Contest: This community-filled event features a parade and costume contest for all ages. It takes place on Halloween day and starts at the Fanwood Memorial Library and ends at the La Grande Park.
  • The Santa Parade: A cherished Fanwood tradition, the Santa Parade brings joy to the community during the holiday season. Santa and his helpers parade through the town, spreading holiday cheer. The parade typically takes place in early December.

Outdoor recreation

  • Fanwood Nature Center: This beautiful nature preserve spans over 6 acres, offering winding trails through lush greenery. Perfect for a peaceful walk or bird watching, the Fanwood Nature Center is a haven for nature lovers.
  • La Grande Park: La Grande Park is a favorite among locals. It features a playground, baseball fields, basketball courts, and a picnic area. It’s the perfect spot for a family outing or a friendly sports match.
  • Forest Road Park: This park offers a variety of recreational facilities including tennis courts, a playground, and a gazebo. There’s also an open field perfect for soccer or frisbee. The park’s walking path is a favorite among local joggers and dog walkers.
  • Watchung Reservation: The largest nature reserve in Union County is about a 10-minute drive from Fanwood. Covering over 2,000 acres, the park includes a 6-mile historic trail that lets visitors take a peek into how the land was used before. Follow it all the way to the Trailside Nature & Science Center, also located within the park.
  • Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge: A birder’s paradise, Great Swamp spans 12 square miles and is a prime destination to spot waterfowl, some of which are only stopping by in the area during their migration. It’s approximately 30 minutes away from Fanwood.
